MEZCAL MINT JULIP

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

The cocktail season has well and truly arrived so what better way to celebrate summer than by getting creative and shaking up a storm.

For those bored of the usual Aperol Spritz or Gin & Tonic, it’s time to enter the world of Mezcal and mix it up. 

A growing trend over the last few years across the UK, Mezcal hails from Mexico and is defined as any agave-based liquor and can be made from over 30 varieties of agave, such as Espadín, Tobalá, Tobaziche, Tepeztate, Arroqueño and Blue Agave, which is famously used to make tequila. 

Known for the smoky and fruity characters, Mezcal is ever so versatile and can be utilised in all manner of short, long and shook-up drinks. 

Like with many cocktails, some sweetness is essential so experiment with our natural sugars when whizzing up your syrups. 

Here is a beauty for a hot summer’s day:

Ingredients

50ml El Recuerdo Mezcal

25ml fresh lime juice

25ml mint simple syrup (see ingredients below)

Simple Mint Syrup with Panela Sugar

1 cup BONRAW™ Panela sugar

1 cup water

1 cup of fresh mint leaves

Method

  • Make the simple syrup by adding the ingredients to a pan and bring to the boil. Once it’s boiling, turn the heat down, give it a good stir and simmer for 5 mins. Take off the heat and leave for 15 mins to infuse. Strain and chill. 
  • To a cocktail shaker add the Mezcal, lime juice, simple mint syrup and ice. Shake well until its well combined and chilled.
  • Serve in a highball glass with plenty of ice and mint leaves.
